Vintage Swarovski Jewelry
Vintage Swarovski jewelry can be extraordinary; you can see colors and shapes that are no longer available. The glimmer and shine of these unique crystals and rhinestones are unparalleled. Let's take a look at Swarovski jewelry; a litte of the history and what's for sale.
Swarovski Background
Back in the late 1800's in the beautiful country of Austria, Daniel Swarovski perfected a means of creating crystal rhinestones. Using a mechanical process, Daniel was able to perfectly cut the rhinestones for the best sparkle, in far less time than if done by hand.
Swarovski rhinestones and beads are made with lead crystal, which has a superior look to rhinestones and beads made with regular glass.
Swarovski is still a major player today in jewelry. You can see everything from bracelets to rings to necklaces to brooches, all done up with these glorious stones. You can even find lovely (very popular indeed for collectors).
About Aurora Borealis
While I'm not sure who exactly developed the Aurora Borealis (AB) coating, you need to know that it was first used in costume jewelry in the early 1950's. I would say the year 1955 (since it's the date I most often see), but there's a chance that it might have been available a year or two earlier.
So as a general rule, jewelry with AB stones or beads were manufactured from 1955 onwards. If you see costume jewelry that supposedly dates to the 1930's or 1940's, either the seller is misinformed, or the original stones have been replaced with AB stones.

1928 Costume Jewelry
1928 costume jewelry just barely squeeks in as vintage jewelry. While they have been around since 1968, they also still continue manufacuring jewelry today.
So provenance plays a big role with jewelry from this costume jewelry manufacturer. If you know approximately when the jewelry was purchased, you can get a better idea of its probably worth.
In the case of the booch pictured on the right, I purchased it from a friend who purchased it in the mid 1980's, so I know this particular piece is at least 20 years old.
Signature Look
The signature look for 1928 jewelry definitely has a Victorian influence. And look on the back; you'll find some etched swirling that is characteristic of this manufacturer.
1928 is a family-owned company, founded by Melvyn ("Mel") J. Bernie in 1968.
Meanwhile, here are some pieces of 1928 costume jewelry for your viewing pleasure

KJL for Avon
KJL for Avon is the signature of the jewelry that costume jewelry great Kenneth J. Lane designed for Avon. While Avon jewelry in general is of average quality and design, the KJL pieces are lovely, well-made and very collectible.
While Kenneth J. Lane's jewelry in general is a topic for a different post, his contribution to Avon's line is worth noting.
JKL for Avon Dates
Mr. Lane started producing designs for Avon starting in the mid 1980s and runs all the way through to 2004. While they are all beautiful, it's the JKL for Avon jewelry produced in the 1980's that is most collectible.
The signature is K.J.L for Avon.
The three most popular sets Mr. Lane designed for Avon are as follows:
"Sophisticated Lady": This set is designed around two ram's heads. The necklace has a double-strand of almost lapis-colored beads with two gold-tone ram's heads as the closure. The earrings are of the ram's heads, accented with rhinestones (as is the necklace). The bracelet is a clamper-style, again in gold-tone with two ram's heads. There is also a bar pin, with two facing ram's heads. This set was released in 1987.
"Society": A faux pearl necklace with a clasp made in the shape of a lion's head, holding a circle (giving a door-knocker effect). The clasp was made to be worn in front or on the side -- too pretty to just be worn in back! The lion has clear rhinestone eyes. The matching earrings are of the lion's head, holding a circle (the door-knocker effect). This set was released in 1986.
"Duchess": A gorgeous set, inspired by the Duchess of Windsor! The necklace has a single strand of faux black pearl. The centerpiece is the a marbelized-look panther head, accented with green eyes and clear chatons. Also there are two rhinestone rondells to either side of the panther, and a gold-tone "door knocker" that the panther holds in its mouth. The earrings are rectangular, the background being the marbeled look and accented with green and clear rhinestones. This set was released in 1988.
Other popular KJL for Avon sets are "Midnight Rose" (1987), "New York Collection" (1991), "Royal Sea Collection" (1991) and "Caprianti Collection" (1993).

Jomaz Vintage Jewelry
Jomaz costume jewelry tends to be elegant. The designs tend to be more on the petite-to-medium side, at least when it comes to costume jewelry. Let's talk a litle about this costume jewelry manufacturer, and then go see what's available.
Jomaz Jewelry History
Jomaz is an offshoot of the company Mazer Brothers. Joseph Mazer left the family business to strike out on his own and founded the Joseph J. Mazer Company in 1946 and used the following marks:
- "Jomaz" in capital letters, used from 1946 through 1981.
- "Joseph Mazer" in capital letters (no specific dates known, other than between 1946 and 1981).
The Joseph J. Mazer Company closed in 1981.
Difference in Mazer Brothers and Jomaz Jewelry
In general, Mazer Brothers jewelry brings the higher prices. Partially because it's older -- it was manufactured from the 1920's through to 1951. The jewelry was a little higher end and quite well made.
Jomaz jewelry is newer, as it was made up through 1981. Although not always quite in the same league as the Mazer jewelry, it's still well-made and lovely. Not to mention very collectible!
And as you can see, Jomaz sometimes used very interesting stones in the jewelry. The photo above, the green stones are a beautiful emerald-color plastic that has been carved with a sunburst pattern. It's almost impossible for a photo (at least one of my photos) to capture the amazing effect.
When it comes to Jomaz jewelry, look for a very good condition, as it's on the newer side. Brooches and earrings seem to be the most available, with some necklaces and bracelets available at times.
Look for either parures (demi or full) if you can find them. Otherwise, Jomaz jewelry figural pins are also collectible. Prices tend to be reasonable and at least some of the pieces should be in most everyone's budget.
Now with that information in mind, I'll leave you to browse the collection of Jomaz jewelry available. Have fun!
